Cadaver Lab Episode 62: Team Argento

This episode we dedicate the episode to one of the sickest mothers in film making… That’s right, it’s Argento! Is he sick because he puts some of the most twisted story lines to film? Maybe… Is he the sickest because he has some of the most disgusting gore effects in his films? Maybe… But if you asked me it’s because he has his daughter show her boobies in his films… just weird…

Anyhoo… Sick as he may be, he is a great director. When I realized that I hadn’t seen quite a few of his films Johnny, Stephen, and I decided to rectify that on this episode. Stephen and I talk about The Bird with the Crystal Plumage on Classics, Johnny and I talk about Opera, Trauma, and Sleepless. All in all, kick ass flicks!

Don’t forget that we also have some kick ass talk about Creepers (a.k.a. Phenomena) on It Came from the Public Domain.

Shane rounds out the chat with another episode of Ear Fear!

That’s right… a BONUS episode!!! What exactly is a bonus episode you ask? Well, we’re not even really sure either but for this one we focused solely on the Phantasm franchise.

Being a special bonus episode, we don’t include all of the regular segments, but we fill your earhole with so much shit about the Phantasm franchise that you’re likely to ooze yellow pus.

Ferguson helps us out on this episode as well lending his expertise on the music. We also play a few tunes from the soundtrack as well as a couple of tunes by bands who wrote songs based on Phantasm. We play The Lurking Corpses, Graveyard Devourment and Tall Man by Antiworld.

That’s right folks, it’s the Cadaver Lab Sorority show! Here are the flicks we talk about this episode:

WARNING: Johnny goes ape-shit about one of these flicks… It’s like watching a hurricane!

Also, we have Slasher Central which compares the original House on Sorority Row (1983) with the 2009 Remake Sorority Row. Aaron brings us his thoughts about Sisters of Death (1977) on It Came from the Public Domain. Stephen and Mike talk about Black Sunday (1960), making up for missing Cadaver Classics last episode.

Last but not least, we introduce a brand new segment entitled Ear Fear! Shane Diablo, from the greatest horror-rock band in the world DieMonsterDie, gives us his take on some off the scary music that has been ringing in his ears.

Ever wondered whatever happened to that dude that was in The Crying Game? Ever wondered what would happen if you gave the devil a Pillsbury Poke? Ever wondered what some people use as alternate currency? Well, all those questions, plus tons of others are answered in this installment of Cadaver Trax!

Ferguson has worked his balls off (literally, I’m told) and presented us with the enhancement of Wes Craven’s classic The People Under the Stairs. I think that this movie has special meaning to Ferguson as he too has really weird-looking white people living in his walls who only come out at night to… well… I’m sure you know the rest.

This episode Johnny and I picked some kick-ass flicks. Funny thing is that they were all directed by one man. That man is Lucky McKee. We talk about The Woods, Masters of Horror: Sick Girl, and May (which is a little extra creepy for me… you’ll hear why in the episode).

In It Came from the Public Domain, Aaron talks about Funeral Home (a.k.a. Cries in the night from 1980.

For Cadaver Classics Stephen and I talk about one of the greatest horror masterpieces of all time. We talk about Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. You may want to bring a mop for this one because we’re about to do some gushing.

Cadaver Lab Episode 50: Non-Franchise Slashers

We finally got all the way through our Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th combo retrospectives… In this episode we tackle Jason X, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, and Freddy vs. Jason. Thank goodness that these films have more to offer than some of the “middle” sequels in either of these series because, though I love all the movies, they weren’t particularly great for the conversation. I mean, how many times can you say: “Then he went on a huge killing spree, then he died” and still make it interesting.

Cadaver Lab Episode 46: Werewolves

This episode Sam and Mike pick a topic that is long overdue. Some people say that the idea of the werewolf is a metaphor for the duality of man and that each of us have our wild side that can not be tamed. Others think that the lycanthropy is an allegory for puberty… Either way, it makes a kick-ass monster featured in countless horror films.

Unfortunately we don’t have enough time to discuss all werewolf films. However, we feel like we picked three pretty kick-ass flicks to talk about: Silver Bullet, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London. We also play some tunes that have werewolves as their central theme.

As for the music on this episode, we play a couple of selections from Dr. Cyclops Records, a selection from Jeff Crazy’s band: The Browns, and finish it off with Type O Negative.

Cadaver Lab Episode 39: Girl Power/Die Monster Die

I just want to say that this episode is not for the weak! First of all, it’s twice the length of an already long episode of the CL. Also, we have so much content with interviews, tunes, feedback, and movie reviews, that your head just may explode.

First of all, we have an interview with Shawn Gabborin, the owner and writer for Angry Gnome Comics (http://www.angrygnomecomics.com). Make sure to listen to that because there is an awesome contest in conjunction with this interview and the Pittsburgh Comic-Con.

Next, we have a discussion of films in the category of “Girl Power”! Films where women kick ass and take names. We discuss The Descent, Ginger Snaps, and the ever-cheery I Spit on your Grave.

Here it is! Cadaver Lab Episode 31: Masters of Horror - Post Mortem. This episode we do a quick overview of the Showtime program called Masters of Horror. The thought behind this program is to get the best horror directors (such as John Carpenter, Dario Argento, Stewart Gordon, and Takashi Miike) and give them the chance to direct a one hour short film to showcase their talents. This idea was the brainchild of famed horror director Mick Garris. This show ran for two years and then was cut from Showtime’s schedule. It was reincarnated as Fear Itself on NBC for one season.

As usual, we present the things that you’ve come to expect from Cadaver Lab. We do some feedback including email and some voicemails. You are also treated to Sam’s Man on the Street segment as well as an awesome tribute!

In Episode 28 we discuss some films with the topic of Inbred Redneck Horror. It’s been a little while since our last episode and boy do we make up for some lost time.

The movies we discuss are Deliverance (1972), Wrong Turn (2003), and House of 1000 Corpses (2003). Three movies that may not have the deepest of interwoven stories for a plot, but deliver on the terrifying imagery and an atmosphere of isolation and hopelessness.

Episode 27: Horror Hosts

Get ready for a marathon episode from the Cadaver Lab. Not only do we discuss and review three movies, we discuss a few of our favorite horror hosts. We spend some time discussing why we love horror hosts and what impact that horror hosts have had on our horror movie watching.

We go into detail about Vincent Price, Vampira, Elvira, and Joe Bob Briggs. We share clips from each of these hosts including an introduction from both Joe Bobb and Elvira. Plus, we put in a clip where Sam and Vincent Price shoot the shit!

We reviewed three movies; The Hollywood Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher, The Devil’s Wedding Night, and Fright Night.

Episode 26: Fulci Lives!

We discuss the differences between Fulci and his contemporaries. We talk about what traits go into a Fulci film and discuss some of the highlights from the Fulci movies that we have seen lately.

Due to some unforeseen schedule conflicts and unavoidable coincidences, we weren’t able to bring you our Lucio Fulci episode. Don’t worry though because we will be talking about the gore-meister himself next week. Since we had to scrape together a show topic and Sam was out of town, we were limited to the horror movies that Sam had on his iPod.

Fortunately he had a few decent flicks… not saying we’re including them in this show, but nonetheless. This week we talk about Thir13en Ghosts (2001), Candyman 1992, and The Ring from 2002.

Episode 24: Poppin Sam’s Cherry

As uncomfortable as the title makes us, we decided to take care of some business on this show. We thought we’d pop Sam’s cherry. Now… all of you sick-minded bastards can relax, we’re using that to describe the fact that we want to break Sam out of his “noob” status. We chose three films to talk about this week, all of which have some kind of significance in the horror genre as a whole and some would say that one can’t be a true horror fan until one has seen these. So for those who wanted to try to catch us pressure washing the aluminum trombone, I am sorry!

Although we could have added so many great titles to this list, this week we’re going to discuss Nosferatu 1922, City of the Living Dead 1980, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974.

Nosferatu 1922 - One of the first horror movies ever made, Nosferatu A Symphony of Horror uses skilled acting and great atmosphere to portray the message that is typically illustrated through speech.

City of the Living Dead 1980 - Written and directed by Lucio Fulci, you know that this is going to be one gory ride. Having the award of being the only film that actually made Mike barf, this film delivers on the violence and gore.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 - Tobe Hooper’s gritty masterpiece. We are treated to the most psychotic family in existence (except for maybe the family in Mum and Dad). One of Mike’s

Episode 23: Vampire Origins

This week’s topic is Vampire Origins. We talk about different myths and legends from around the globe regarding the origination of the vampire. Since we ran a little long, we weren’t able to get into the depth that we would have liked, but we are able to discuss some very interesting myths.

We are treated to a few “Impersonate Sam” entries. We also go over some voicemails and emails. One email even mentions how Sam can pop his cherry.

We discuss three films that focus on the origination story of the vampires involved:

Tsui Hark’s Vampire Hunters (2002)

Dracula 2000 (2000):A decent film with an awesome vampire origin story. This film has one of the greatest reveals of any movie in the last 10 years. Unfortunately many genre cliches are present and quite distracting.

Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula (2000): Both Sam and I really enjoyed this historical look at Vlad Tepes’ story… before he became a vampire. Great acting, great set design, and an interesting story make this made for TV film very enjoyable. Again, here is a link to the first portion of the film. Episode 22: Cold As Shit

Sam and Mike tackle three films; The Last Winter 2006, 30 Days of Night 2007, and John Carpenter’s The Thing 1982. We discuss why this setting lends itself well for horror films as well as our thoughts on good ways and bad ways to express political opinions via film.

We also get our first entry to the “Imitate Sam” contest. You’re guaranteed to laugh your ass off when you hear this.

The Last Winter (2006)
This was a tough movie for both Sam and me. While the acting was good, the characters were good, and there was a some real suspense, we felt like the director had a message that he wanted to share. The problem wasn’t with the message, it was with how it was delivered.

30 Days of Night (2007)
A Sam Raimi produced vampire film, 30 Days of Night makes the sometimes frilly undead scary again. A unique interpretation of the vampire, these guys are nothing but animals.

John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982)
What is better than a furry Kurt Russel and an irritated Wilford Brimley? Set in a remote Antarctic snowdrift, this film has many characteristics that makes an awesome horror film. Some of these characteristics are being in a remote area, bleak weather conditions, violence, gore, suspense, paranoia and all the sausage you can eat.

Episode 21: Sci-Fi Horror

This week Mike and Sam discuss a few selections that fall into the genre of Sci-Fi Horror. We realize that this topic is not the most unique, but we put our spin on the topic. We review Galaxy of Terror 1981, Event Horizon 1997, and the classic Alien 1979.

In this episode, Sam gets called a name that he just can’t seem to die and a flame-war is started with another podcast… kind of.

Galaxy of Terror (1981)
We actually disagreed on our reviews of this flick. We both agree that it was a cheesy 80’s Sci-Fi flick with poor acting and terrible special effects, but one of us was just in a better mood that day!

Event Horizon (1997)
One of the creepiest films that we have reviewed to date, Event Horizon is part Alien and part Hellraiser… though not as good as either. However, we both feel that this flick has enough to stand on its own and entertain.

Alien (1979)
Do I even have to say anything about this one? Arguably the best Sci-Fi horror film ever made, Sam and Mike kiss this film’s butt for about 15 minutes.

Episode 20: Repo! The Genetic Opera

This week we discuss Repo! The Genetic Opera. A film starring Paul Sorvino, Anthony Head, and Sarah Brightman. This is a little bit different than the flicks that we typically talk about. A musical in the vein of Sweeny Todd or The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Repo is filled with great visuals and a very unique storyline.

We didn’t think we were going to get a show out this week, but the stars aligned and we were able to put a shorter episode together. I will say though, that since Repo was such a good flick, we had a lot to talk about.

Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
We were pleasantly surprised to catch this gem. Stunning visuals, gory effects, disturbing situations, and great music set this film apart from many of the movies that came out in 2008.
